What is TMJ disorder?
TMJ disorder, also known as TMD, is a condition that affects the function of the temporomandibular joint. This is the joint that hinges the jaw together and allows the mouth to open and close. Sometimes, it can become dysfunctional, resulting in pain and discomfort.
What causes TMJ disorder?
Some patients may just be predisposed to the condition, while others may have the condition creep up due to misalignment of the jaw which causes an unusual bite alignment and therefore more risk for developing the condition.
How is TMJ treated?
There are many ways to treat TMJ, though only very severe cases may require surgical intervention. At Pure Dental Care, we recommend a solution known as oral appliance therapy. This is when patients wear a special mouth guard which helps realign the jaw and reduce the pressure on the teeth caused by clenching and grinding—often associated with TMJ disorder. Some patients may even benefit from orthodontic treatment to help line up the bite and reduce pressure in the area.
