West Palm Beach area dentist describes the symptoms and severity of TMJ disorder

TMJ disorder treatment from experienced dentist in West Palm Beach area

At Pure Dental Care, we know that patients can experience a variety of issues with their smiles. For some individuals, a problematic temporomandibular joint (TMJ) may cause a number of problems. The temporomandibular joint is the joint that hinges the upper and lower jaw. This allows opening and closing the mouth to speak, chew, and even yawn. However, when issues arise with this joint, it can result in a wide range of issues that may become painful.

Sometimes referred to as TMJ disorder or TMD, the symptoms and severity of the condition can vary for West Palm Beach area patients. Below is just a quick example of the types of issues that may stem from these joints:

  • Clenching and grinding the teeth, called bruxism
  • Swelling on the side of the face
  • Fatigued muscles around the jaw
  • Tenderness and pain around the jaw joint that can spread up to the head or down through the neck and shoulders
  • Jaws locking
  • Clicking and popping when opening or closing the mouth

Some patients may even experience problems such as ringing in the ear (tinnitus), earaches, chronic headaches, and toothaches.

Pure Dental Care is proud to offer services for patients in and around the area of West Palm Beach and encourage patients to learn about what they may expect if they are experiencing issues with the temporomandibular joint. We can diagnose the condition and then speak to patients about the treatment options available.

In many cases, oral appliance therapy will be considered as a way to control the issue, and reduce the pain and discomfort many patients experience when dealing with TMD. Oral appliance therapy uses a special mouth guard that patients wear to reduce the tension in the jaw joint and help realign it so that it functions better. Other patients may be ideal candidates for orthodontic work, which can also be used to repair the jaw alignment.

"Unfortunately, over the years my teeth had deteriorated and were in very poor shape. As you can guess it had been many years since I had been to a dentist. Fortunately, my doctor recommended Dr. Keith. Dr. Keith and her staff put me at ease and answered all my questions and laid out a plan of what was needed. I was happy to find they were of the holistic mindset and felt very much they were people I could trust with my serious dental conditions. As we have worked through this over the past months I find they are always there for me. If I have an issue here or there, they take it seriously and quickly have me in to correct it as best as possible. They were very careful in removing previous mercury fillings, taking measures to ensure I was not inhaling mercury during extraction. They keep me well informed of what is happening each step of the way which makes me confident in them and in how I am proceeding. I would recommend Dr. Keith to anyone who requires great and friendly dental care." ~Steven
