West Palm Beach area dentist describes the symptoms and severity of TMJ disorder
At Pure Dental Care, we know that patients can experience a variety of issues with their smiles. For some individuals, a problematic temporomandibular joint (TMJ) may cause a number of problems. The temporomandibular joint is the joint that hinges the upper and lower jaw. This allows opening and closing the mouth to speak, chew, and even yawn. However, when issues arise with this joint, it can result in a wide range of issues that may become painful.
Sometimes referred to as TMJ disorder or TMD, the symptoms and severity of the condition can vary for West Palm Beach area patients. Below is just a quick example of the types of issues that may stem from these joints:
- Clenching and grinding the teeth, called bruxism
- Swelling on the side of the face
- Fatigued muscles around the jaw
- Tenderness and pain around the jaw joint that can spread up to the head or down through the neck and shoulders
- Jaws locking
- Clicking and popping when opening or closing the mouth
Some patients may even experience problems such as ringing in the ear (tinnitus), earaches, chronic headaches, and toothaches.
Pure Dental Care is proud to offer services for patients in and around the area of West Palm Beach and encourage patients to learn about what they may expect if they are experiencing issues with the temporomandibular joint. We can diagnose the condition and then speak to patients about the treatment options available.
In many cases, oral appliance therapy will be considered as a way to control the issue, and reduce the pain and discomfort many patients experience when dealing with TMD. Oral appliance therapy uses a special mouth guard that patients wear to reduce the tension in the jaw joint and help realign it so that it functions better. Other patients may be ideal candidates for orthodontic work, which can also be used to repair the jaw alignment.Back to TMJ/TMD Page
